Dhaka, Oct 7 – Jatiya Oikya Prokriya convener, Dr Kamal Hossain Sunday expressed surprise over the arrest of many political leaders and filing of hundreds of ghostly cases implicating them despite they earlier demanded not to file any new case and arrest any political leader until the next general elections.“We have demanded the release of all political leaders and not to arrest any political leaders until the election. But the result has been totally the reverse as thousands of new fabricated cases have been filed,” he said while speaking at a human chain programme in front Jatiya Press Club.
Dr Kamal, the framer of the Constitution reiterated the demand for holding a free, fair and acceptable election for the restoration of “country’s ownership” to the people.
There is no alternative to ensure holding a free and fair election to restore the ownership of the people in the country, he said adding that the people would bring about a change by getting united in a
democratic manner.
Jatiya Oikya Prokriya, a move for forging a greater national unity over the next elections, organized the human chain to press home their demand to protect the voting rights of the people.
The organization held the programme 15 days after its September 22nd citizens’ rally where top leaders of BNP, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rab) and Nagorik Oikya extended their support to the unity move.
This time, no leader from any of these organisations was present at the human chain programme began that began at 4:00 pm and continued for over an hour.
Dr Kamal Hossain expressed his optimism about the greater national unity saying that people’s unity is needed to establish their rights.
“Our vision is to establish the ownership of the country for 16 crore people. If there is no free and fair election, they will be deprived of their ownership of the country,” he said.
He observed that since there is no ownership of the people, country’s wealth is being plundered randomly.
Referring to newspapers report, he said thousand crore of Taka is being plundered abroad but there is no investment and employment and no mill is set up which is frustrating the promises of the independence.
The eminent jurist hoped that the people would be able to realize their demands as they did it in 1952, six-point movement, the war of liberation in 1971 and the anti-autocrat movement in the 90s.
He said that they would be able to form the government through holding the election under a neutral government.
Jatiya Oikya Prokriya member secretary Mostafa Amin, who moderated the programme, said the next course of political action would be announced soon in consultation with different political parties and
organisations.
Gano Forum executive president advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Gano Forum general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu, former student leader Sultan Mohammed Monsur, Gano Forum leader Mushtaq Ahmed, among others, spoke on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
