‘Farabi blames Hizbut Tahrir men for killing Avijit’ – Police

Suspect in the Blogger Avijit murder case Shafiur Rahman Farabi has been quoted by police investigors to have told interrogators of the Detective Branch (DB) of police that the extremist members of the outlawed Hizb ut-Tahrir, killed Bangladeshi born US blogger Avijit Roy.Farabi has been on a 10-day remand is accused of issuing repeated death threats to Avijit. He was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Jatrabari Bus Terminal on Monday.
Avijit Roy was hacked to death and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya injured on February 26 evening on the Dhaka University campus after they came out of the Ekushey Book Fair at Bangla Academy premises.
A group “killing cell” of militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahri had been keeping an eye on Avijit and his wife Bonna right investigatorsahrir. This twitter account operated from UK, investigators said.
Farabi is said to be a member of Hizbut Tahrir.
Invrestigators said he wrote: ‘Avijit Roy lives in America. So it’s not possible to kill him at the moment. But when he’ll return to the country, he’ll be murdered’.
Visible as well as hidden CCTV cameras installed in the area have recorded the murder. DB is analysing the footages from those cameras,” Deouty Commissioner of DB (South) Roy said.
Farabi has not confessed his involvement in the killing of Blogger Avijit. – News Desk
