Fireman Sohel Rana dies giving space to those threatened by fire

Dhaka, April 08 – The brave heart Sohel Rana who succumbed to his injuries in the Banani fire rescued at least 40 people during the frantic operation.
“While he was extinguishing fire standing on the ladder, he was making space for the people on the same ladder. But giving space for the increasing number of people on the ladder, he scaled down with the ladder and also hanging in single rope. But the ladder was automated that smashed his leg,” said one of the witness Samsur Rahman.
Rahman told the Independent that he was also on the spot as he is a media man. “I was surprised for his activities what he did for the fire victims that time. It was unbelievable and also beyond description how a man did this,” he said.
That time all fire fighters were busy to douse the fire and some for rescuing the people who were got stuck on the building but Sohel Rana was different from all of them, said Samsur Rahman.
Talking to The Independent Md Bajlur Rahman, senior Station Master of Kurmitola Fire Service and Civil Defence where Sohel also worked expressed his profound and said that he was a brave fire fighter in
the Kurmitola Fire Station. He (Sohel) always fights for save the people who were in the risk.
“Sohel rescued many lives from the fire. He is a real hero of the country, who sacrificed his life in the line of duty saving others soul,” said Rahman mourning that they became shock while they heard; Sohel is no more with them.
According to eyewitness, on March 28, Sohel was working to rescue the people who were trapped in the FR tower of Banani. At one stage, his security hooks stuck with the rescue ladder. At that time, he slid
away from the ladder and hang on dangerously and one of his legs broke.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Md Abdul Hamid have expressed their deep shock and sorrow at the death of firefighter Sohel Rana.
In separate condolence messages, the premier and the president said Sohel Rana will remain a “bright example” of sacrificing his own life to save the lives of others.
Both of them prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
Firefighter Sohel Rana, who sustained injuries during Banani’s FR Tower fire rescue operation, has died while undergoing treatment in Singapore General Hospital yesterday.
He sustained serious injuries, on March 28, while rescuing people from Banani’s FR Tower fire.
Later, critically-injured Sohel was taken to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. On April 5, he was flown to Singapore by an air ambulance for better treatment. – Staff Reporter
