Five sentenced to gallows for raping Ctg girl

A court here on Sunday found five people guilty of abducting and gang-raping a teenage girl in 1997and sentenced them to death in absentia on Sunday.The convicts are Rashid Ahmed, son of Kabir Ahmed of Purba Chambal village in Banskhali upazila, Nurul Afsar, son of Fazlul Kabir, Nasir, son of Rashid Ahmed, Kabir Ahmed, son of Amir Hamza and M Kenu, son Mafzal Ahmed. They all are no on the run.
Judge M Rezaul Karim of Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict.
Advocate Chandan Talukder, public prosecutor of the tribunal, said the court handed down the highest punishment to the accused as the charges
brought by the prosecution against them were proved beyond doubt.
According to the prosecution, the five on April 11, 1997 abducted the teenage girl breaking open the door of a house in Chambal village in Banskhali at the deed of night. The abductors took the girl to a nearby hill and gang-raped her there.
But, locals rushed in as the girl’s mother cried out for help after the abduction. They started searching the hill and found the girl in a critical condition. The victim was then taken to a local hospital.
On April 12,1997, the victim’s mother filed a case with Banskhali Police Station accusing the five people.
On August 24 that year, Banskhali police submitted the charge sheet against the five. The court on August 10, 1998 framed charges against the accused.
The court pronounced the verdict today after examining the evidence and four defense witnesses. (Source: UNB)
