Flood levels have started receding in northern districts adjacent to Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers at Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra and Nilphamari but swelling in Tangail, Jessore, and Chandpur in central Bangladesh.
In Gaibanda overall flood situation at chars and Brahmaputra river basins of the district improved further as the Brahmaputra marked fall in last 24 hours till this morning.BWDB sources said water level of the Brahmaputra decreased by 13. Due to the flood, over 3 lakh people of Sundarganj, Sadar, Phulchhari, and Shaghata upazilas of the district had been marooned.
Crops including Aus paddy, transplanted Aman paddy, seed-bed of T-Aman paddy, jute, and summer vegetables on 3,440 hectares of land went under flood water.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad said the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry sanctioned 1,050 tonnes of rice as general relief and cash Tk 41 lakh for the flood victims so far to meet their urgent need.
In Jamalpur, the waters of the Jamuna have fallen well. However, the water level of the river is still 87cm above of the danger level. In the past 60 hours water level has fallen by 36 cm. Abdul Mannan,an official of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) informed. Local administration of the district hopes flood situation would improve in the next 2/3 days if water level continues to fall.
Flood situation in Nilphamari district is improving. Till filing of the report river Teesta water at Daliya point was flowing 30 cm below the water level. However, despite the water level fall around 20,000 people are still marooned. River erosion continues in Dimla upazila. Flood situation in 11 villages of the upazila has not improved yet. They are under water for the last 21 days.
Reliefs are being distributed among the flood affected people of the area.
In Kurigram the overall flood situation remains unchanged even though water level of Dharla, Teesta, Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar rivers have come down within last 24 hours.
Water of the Dharla River and the Brahmaputra River are flowing above 35 centimeter (cm) in Dharla Bridge point and 45 cm in Chilmari Ghat point of their danger levels today (August 1) while the Teesta and the Dudhkumar rivers are flowing 121 cm in Kaunia Ghat point and 143 cm in Noonkhawa Ghat point under their danger levels, local WDB sources said.
Abdul Mottalib Molla, district relief and rehabilitation officer (in-charge) told this correspondent: “We have been distributed 1,275 MT of rice, Tk. 38 lakhs and 2000 packets dry food .The relief distribution works have been continued to mitigate the flood victims’ want.”
In Tangail the flood situation worsened. Out of 12 seven Upazilas have been affected by flood. At least 100 villages under Tangail Sadar, Bhuapur, Gopalpur, Kalihati, Dhanbari, Nagorpur, Delduwar Upazila have been inundated by flood water under Tangail district with the rise of water level of the mighty river Jamuna, Dhaleswari and its tributaries due to rainfall and onrush of water from the upstream. Water of Jamuna is flowing above danger level in Bhuapur point.
From sources it is learned that about one lakh people have become marooned by flood water in the district. More than 100 educational institutes have been closed as the institutions have been inundated by flood water.
In Jessore incessant rain during the last few days has wreaked havoc in two upazilas of jessore district . Al activities of the people of Keshabpur and Monirampur upazilas of the district virtually came to a halt due to heavy down pour , said our district correspondent.
A total of 40000 people of 3o villages of Keshabpur upazila were marooned due to serious water logging caused by torrential rain. Vast tracts of crop land in the upazila were inundated by rain water standing Amon paddy and other crops were damaged by rain water. Aushpaddy on 1200 hectares of land , 905 hectares of vegetable lands 600 hectores of jut land , 160 hectores of Ropa Aman land , 390 hectares of other crop land area now under water in Keshabpur upazila .
The Meghna river is flowing 15 centi metres above danger level in Chandpur belt due to the on- rush of flood waters from upper riparians. The flood waters are flowing into the Bay of Bengal through Chandpur . Following this rise in water level , many dwelling houses in Chandpur Sadar and Haimchar Upazilas are already submerged. Erosion by the Meghna river has intensified in Chandpur Sadar and Haimchar Upazilas eroding vast areas and threatening Chandpur Town Protection embankment.
According to Flood Forcasting & Warning Centre the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Surma-Kushiyara are in falling state. Ganges is in steady state while Padma is in rising state. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Surma-Kushiyara may continue to fall in next 72 hours. Flood Situation in Sirajganj district may likely to continue improve in next 72 hours. Padma river may likely to rise in next 48 hours, which may cause slightly deterioration of flood situation in low lands adjacent to Rajbari, Manikganj, MUnshiganj and Sariotpur districts.
Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said yesterday that the government has adequate relief products. No irregularities would be tolerated in relief disbursement. He was speaking to journalists while distributing relief products among the flood affected people in Tangail. – Staff Reporter
