Dhaka – A low pressure turns into well marked low in the East central Bay of Bengal yesterday that may reactivate the Monsoon rains further over the country, meteorologists said yesterday.
The rains would be concentrated in the south than the flood ravaged north. There may be some rains in the central regions, a meteorologist at the BMD said.However, flood forecasting and warning centre (FFWC) sources said, their forecast models for the next 5 days shows the floods are waning in the north.The major rivers like the Brahmaputra is on the retreat coming down from its danger level(DL) slowly that may help the most affected Kurigram,Jamalpur and Bogra residents sigh a heave of relief. Along with the Brahmaputra which takes the name of Jamuna downstream playing havoc at a vast swathe of lands in Jamalpur and Bogra is slowly retreating. Only the old-Brahmaputra is swelling under pressure of the Brahmaputra waters downstream is threatening low lying areas of the Dhaka city and Narayanganj pushing up the Shitalakhya, Balu and Turag,Ripon Karmaker, an official with the FFWC told The Independent yesterday.
While the Ganges upstream remains steady the Padma at the downstream threatening the central regions of Faridpur, Shariatpur, Rajbari and Munshiganj before it flows into the Meghna that carries the massive joint flow of the Padma and Jamuna into the Bay.
But the rains may remain normal in August despite 13 percent more rains over the normal average precipitations in July, a long-range forecast for the month by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said yesterday.
There may be a normal flooding during the second half of the month the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna basins, the forecast issued after a meeting of the experts from different disciplines, including the flood forecasting and warning centre(FFWC) said.
Quoting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and National Water Commission (NWC), Karmaker said, the rains in the upstream of the major rivers like the Brahmaputra and the Ganges would slow down,he noted.
There would be 1-2 Monsoon low pressures in the Bay of Bengal in August as well, the BMD forecast for August said.
