Gazipur and Rangpur to get metropolitan police

The Cabinet on Monday approved in principle the drafts of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Act, 2015 and Rangpur Metropolitan Police Act, 2015, aiming to provide more legal and police services to the people of the two newly-constituted metropolitan cities.The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division Bijay Bhattacharya said the draft Acts were approved subject to vetting of the Law Ministry.

He said the draft laws were formulated in light of the Metropolitan Acts of the other metropolitan cities of the country as those are necessary to provide legal and better police service to the people of any metropolitan city.

After detailed discussions, he said, the Cabinet made some observations on the proposed draft Acts and directed the authorities concerned to complete necessary legal activities and finalise the drafts of the Metropolitan Acts.

The Cabinet Secretary said such Acts are framed so that legal and police services to the people in the Metropolitan areas could be ensured more effectively.
