Gazipur defeat great danger signal for Govt: Ershad

Chairman of Jatiya Party HM Ershad on Monday termed the defeat of Ajmot Ullah Khan in the just concluded Gazipur City Corporation election as a great danger signal no-10 for the ruling Awami League led 14-party grand alliance government. He made the remark while inaugurating the Dilkusha Branch of his Union Bank at Motijheel in the city.
Ajmot Ullah Khan, the ruling 14-party alliance backed candidate was defeated to Prof MA Mannan, the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance backed mayoral candidate by a huge margin of votes. The Gazipur city election was held on Saturday.
The JP chief said it was meaningless to extend Jatiya Party’s support to Ajmot at the last moment since the local JP leaders and activists had earlier started working in favour of Mannan.
“It was not possible for Mannan to be elected as mayor of GCC if the voters did not cast their votes in favor of him,” he added.
Referring to the failures of the AL-led grand alliance government to run the country, Ershad said that the people are now dissatisfied over the misdeeds of the government including, share market, hallmark scams and traffic congestions in Dhaka and other major cities in the country.
The former president demanded dividing the country into eight provinces to decentralise the administrations to doorsteps of the peole.
Among others, managing director of the bank Abdul Hamid Miah, JP presidium members—Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu and Shunil Subha Roy and some bankers were present at the function.
