Gen Aziz Ahmed made new Army Chief

Dhaka, June 18 – Quarter Master General of Bangladesh Army Lieutenant General Aziz Ahmed has been appointed as 16th Chief of Army Staff for three years. He has also been promoted to the rank of General with effect from June 25, this year according to a notification by the defence ministry issued yesterday.
Aziz Ahmed has been appointed as army chief as per the Defence Services Chiefs (Appointment, Retirement, Salary and Allowance) Act 2018, the notification said.
Aziz Ahmed, former Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh, will replace existing chief of army staff General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq.
Meanwhile, the defence ministry has granted one-year Leave Preparatory to Retirement (LPR) of existing army chief General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq for one year on June 25 this year from his service in Bangladesh Army.
Talking to journalists, the newly appointed army chief Aziz Ahmed said that he will take over his new assignment on June 25 afternoon this year.
Aziz Ahmed was also served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC), GOC of in 33 Infantry Division in Comilla cantonment of the Bangladesh Army.
He was an observer for the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) and a military adviser to the force commander of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS).
Aziz Ahmed was born on January 1, 1961, at Narayangonj. He comes from Chandpur District. His father was Abdul Wadud and his mother is Renuja Begum. He completed his SSC from Mohammadpur Government High School in 1975, went to Notre Dam College, Diploma in Textile Technology from College of Textile Technology in 1980 and earned his graduation in BA (pass) under Chittagong University in 1983.
He is also a graduate of Defense Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur. He completed his Masters in Defense Studies and MSc (Technical) from National University and also did Masters in Business Administration (Executive) from American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB).
Aziz was commissioned in the Corps of Artillery on June 10, 1983, with 8th BMA Long Course.
He had been a GSO-3 (Operation) in CHT, Brigade major in an infantry brigade, GSO-II in AHQ Military Training Directorate and GSO-I of AHQ Pay Pension and Allowance Directorate. – Staff Reporter
