Girl burnt to death just for a mobile phone set – one held

Narsingdi, Oct 29 – A case was filed for burning a 12-year-old schoolgirl alive over the theft of mobile phone set against seven people, making her aunt Beauty Begum prime accused, on Saturday night.Abdus Sattar, the father of victim Aziza Begum, filed the case with Shibpur Police Station, mentioning names of four accused.
After that police arrested Tamuja Begum, 55, wife of Firoj Mia, one of the accused in the case.
Prime accused Beauty Begum is yet to be arrested as she went into hiding after the incident, said sub-inspector Rafikul Islam, also investigating officer of the case.
The police official also hoped that the prime accused will be netted as fast as possible.
Earlier, Aziza, a class-V student, who was allegedly set on fire by her aunt for ‘stealing a mobile phone set’ at Khainput village in Shibpur Upazila on Friday night died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Saturday.
Rehena Begum, the mother of the victim, alleged that her sister-in-law, wife of Saudi expatriate Abdus Salam, the younger brother of Abdus Sattar, beat up Aziza accusing her of stealing a mobile phone set and threatened her to burn alive around 4:00 pm on Friday.
Later, Aziza went missing. Hearing her groaning, neighbours and family members rushed to the spot and rescued her with severe burn injuries from beside her uncle’s house around 9:00 pm. – UNB
