The BNP-led 20-party alliance yesterday accused the government of inviting undemocratic forces by stopping all the paths of democratic movement.
“The government is looking for a solution to the political impasse through the barrels of the gun in exchange of citizens and political rights,” said BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed on behalf of the alliance.
In a statement issued from an undisclosed location, he said both democracy and development has fallen into crisis for ruling Awami League’s adoption of Ayub Khan Model of development first, democracy second and less democracy and more development. He announced extension of the hartal till 6am on FridayThe BNP leader said that the conscious people believe the government is trying to mislead the country and the international community by raising the bogey of militancy to prolong the “misrule” in the country.
“Awami League is the artificial creator of militancy in the country. Now they are giving birth to test-tube baby of militants everyday deceiving the people and with an ill motive to retain to power,” he said.
He criticised the government for not arresting Gaibandha AL leader Piarul Islam and Ghatail Upazila AL leader Helal Uddin even after police reportedly recovered crude and petrol bombs from their homes on Sunday.
On the other hand, the BNP spokesperson protested the killing of Rangpur Jamaat leader Shah Nazmul Huda Lavelu in what he said the name of crossfire.
He reiterated the alliance’s warning to continue the on-going movement until their demand for an inclusive free and fair election is held under a non-partisan administration.
He called upon the people as well as the leaders and activists of the alliance to make the on-going hartal, blockade programme a success. Staff Reporter
