Gulshan Cafe attack suspect Hasnat refused bail

Dhaka – The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka Wednesday denied bail to Abul Hasnat Reza Karim, a suspect in police investigation into the Gulshan café attack.Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla rejected his bail plea. However, Hasnat’s lawyer Abdul Mannan Khan told the court, the case details of the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery does not mention Hasnat’s name.
“None of the witnesses mentioned Karim’s name in their depositions. Mobile call lists did have any proof of his involvement. He resigned from the North South University long ago, the defence lawyer added.
Hasnat, who once taught at the private university, was present in Holey Artisan Bakery when it was stormed by gunmen who left 20 diners dead on July 1 last year. Besides, Nibras Islam, one of the five gunmen studied at the North South University.
Hasnat was not produced in the court during the hearing on his bail plea. His lawyer also said, “Hasnat has been suffering from diabetes, heart disease, kidney complications and high blood pressure. He is a peace loving man.”
However, Nazim Uddin, Assistant Commissioner Police Prosecution Division said in his responses, “Hasnat could be named in the charge-sheet. Given his age, it is unlikely that he suffers from so many diseases.” – Special Correspondent
