At least 13 people, two among them policemen, were injured in two separate clashes between police, Jamaat-Shibir men and Awami League activists in Sadar Dhakshin Upazila during today’s (Wednesday) hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islam.
Witnesses said a group of Jamaat-Shibir men tried to put up barricade on the Comilla-Noakhali Highway by placing logs at Foyezganj in the upazila at about 6.30am.
Police fired seven rounds of rubber bullet, leaving eight Jamaat-Shibir men injured.
Unruly Jamaat-Shibir men then retaliated by throwing brick chips at police, leaving two constables wounded.
Later the same Jamaat-Shibir men injured three local activists of Awami League attacking them with sharp weapons at Perul as they (Awami League activists) obstructed a procession brought out by the Jamaat-Shibir men.
Two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh were deployed in the city to maintain law and order during the strike.
The countrywide 48-hour hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami in protest against what it said the government’s conspiracy to annihilate the party entered the second day today (Wednesday)
