HC asks DU: Why not second chance to admission seekers

The High Court has asked why aspirants would not be given a second chance to take the Dhaka University admission tests.
In a rule issued by the bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md. Ejarul Haque Akondo on Monday, it also said that why the university’s decision to not allow second-timers would not be declared illegal. The court asked the university’ vice-chancellor, registrar, assistant registrar and exams controller along UGC chairman and education secretary to come up with explanations by two weeks.
Those, who after clearing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams, used to get two chances for entering the premier Dhaka University.
But in October last year, the university said they decided to disallow a second chance to aspirants seeking admission to its courses.
Keeping such provisions can ‘deprive’ first time entry seekers, according to Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique.
“Only those who pass HSC in 2015-16 academic year can take the admission tests of the Dhaka University. Those who have passed before just cannot stand,” he had said then.
Protests in different parts of the country as well as the university premises broke out against the decision.
On Thursday, a petition was filed with the High Court challenging the university’s decision. – bdnews24.com
