HC directs Comilla mayor to surrender in graft case

Dhaka, 04 Jan – The High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday directed Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku to surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka in a graft case. However, the apex court, asked the CMM court to grant bail to mayor Sakku after his surrender in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim also issued a rule asking Monirul Haque Sakku and the government to explain as to why the lower court order exempting Sakku of the corruption case should not be cancelled. The bench passed the order and rule after the ACC filed a petition challenging the legality of the lower court order.
ACC lawyer advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told newmen that Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku has to surrender before the court after he receives the order of the High Court. Earlier, a Dhaka court on November 21 exempted Sakku from the corruption case, he said.
On Jan 7, 2008, the ACC lodged the case against the mayor and his wife with Ramna Model Police Station of Dhaka on charge of amassing Tk 4.57 crore through illegal means and concealing information about wealth worth over Tk 1.12 crore from the commission. – Special Correspondent
