Dhaka-The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking the government to explain in two weeks why it should not be directed to take necessary legal action against local lawmaker Salim Osman, MP, and others who publicly humiliated a school teacher in Narayanganj.It also asked the authorities concerned to inform it within three days on what step they have been taken against the responsible persons, who were involved in humiliating a school teacher of Narayanganj.
In a suo moto move, the HC bench comprising Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Md Iqbal Kabir issued the rule following the reports published in different national dailies over the incident.
It asked the Narayanganj superintendent of police to submit a report before it in three days on what steps has been taken against the persons responsible for the humiliation.
Home secretary, law secretary, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Narayanganj, thana nirbahi officer concerned and officer in charge of Bandar Police Station have been respondents to reply to the rule within two weeks.
According to the report, on Friday last, Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Bandar area, was beaten up by a mob and made to squat holding his earlobes in presence of local Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Selim Osman, after an allegation of hurting religious sentiment was brought against him.
On Tuesday, the school authority suspended the teacher, who was humiliated in public on charges of hurting religious sentiment, allegedly on instructions of the local MP.
The public humiliation of the headmaster triggered massive protests across the country. A video clip of the incident has gone viral on social media, triggering public outrage and a firestorm of protests on social networking sites.
Infuriated, Facebook users began uploaded photos in their profiles, showing they were holding their ears in a token of apology shown to the headmaster with a “sorry sir” statement, the report said.
Advocate MK Rahman placed the reports before the court seeking its directive over the matter. Then the HC bench came up with the order in the suo moto move.
