HC orders disposal of Rana Plaza case in 6 months

Dhaka, Apr 9 (UNB) – Denying bail to Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana in a case filed over violation of the building code in construction of the building, the High Court on Tuesday directed the lower court to dispose of the case by six months.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order disposing of a rule issued earlier over Sohel Rana’s bail in the case.

On May 9, 2016, the High Court issued the rule after Rana’s wife filed an application on April 18 of the same year seeking his bail.

Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state while Advocate Md Khurshid Alam Khan argued for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Advocate Md Sajjad Ali Chowdhury stood for the accused.

On April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, an illegally constructed building at Savar housing five garment factories, came down crashing, killing 1,175 people and injuring over 2,000 others.

ACC Deputy Assistant Director SM Mofidul Islam filed the case on June 15, 2014 over the violation of the building code in constructing the building.
