HC to deliver judgement in case against Maya Oct 7

Dhaka, Aug 14 – The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday fixed October 7 for delivering judgement on the appeal filed by Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya against his conviction and sentencing him in a graft case. The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam fixed the date after concluding re-hearing on the appeal on Tuesday.
A special court on February 14, 2008, convicted Maya and sentenced him to 13 years in jail, fined him Tk 5 crore, and ordered confiscation of about Tk 6 crore of his “ill-gotten” wealth. However, he was acquitted by the High Court on October 27, 2010.
In 2011, the ACC filed the petition for permission to appeal against the High Court verdict.
On June 14, 2015, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court had cancelled a prior High Court verdict that had acquitted Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya from the corruption charges, that landed him in 13 years of imprisonment. – Correspondent
