Hefajat postpones Sunday hartal

Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh on Thursday postponed its Sunday’s countrywide daylong hartal fearing further repressive acts ‘by the government’. “Many of our men were killed and still many more remained missing following the joint operation at Shapla Chattar. If we enforce hartal in the present situation, the government can launch further repressive acts on our leaders and activists,” Hefajat leader Maulana Munir Ahmed told UNB.
The Islamist group also demanded the release of its detained leaders and activists, including its secretary general Junaid Babunagri.
Earlier on Tuesday, Hefajat-e Islam called a countrywide daylong shutdown for Sunday protesting the crackdown on its leaders and activists at Shapla Chattar.
Maulana Ashraf Ali Nizampuri, literature and cultural affairs secretary of the Chittagong-based Islamist group, announced the hartal programme at a press conference at Hathazari Madrasah. UNB
