BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday alleged that now the human rights in the country is not only under threat but also on the verge of ruination.
“The government itself is violating the human rights,” he said while addressing a press conference at party headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city.His comments came a day after acting chairman of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Shahabuddin Chuppu at a function criticised BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for her remarks that the ACC turned into a “commission of impunity.” Chuppu also suggested the former premier to see her face in the mirror.
Mirza Fakhrul termed the remarks of ACC boss irresponsible and beyond state gesture and said such type of statement is not descent from those holding constitutional posts.
“He (Chuppu) has made the remarks as a political leader. He did not pass the comments as a responsible person staying in a constitutional post,” said the BNP leader.
He said that Chuppu was a leader of Chhatra League in the Rajshahi University and demanded withdrawal his statement.
Replying to a question, the BNP spokesperson condemned the issuance of arrest of warrant and said the ongoing movement to hold an inclusive, free and fair election could not be resisted by filing “false cases” against party senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.
Reiterating the demand not to increase the prices of power and gas, he warned that they would unitedly resist the government’s move by launching non-stop programme, if their prices are hiked.
“Non-stop programme will be launched after the day when the prices of power and gas will be increased,” he cautioned.
Fakhrul alleged that the government did not take any sustainable steps for the development in power sector. “Whatever projects the government has taken are expensive and vulnerable,” he added.
He accused the government of sheltering foreign investment in private sector in the name of development in power sector and said country’s economy would be vulnerable in future to pay against investment and their interest in foreign exchange.
BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and city leader Abdus Salam, among others, were present on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
