International Mother Language Institute (IMLI) of Dhaka, Bangladesh has received the recognition of Unesco as its Category-2 Institute.IMLI becomes the first-ever Unesco recognised institutes in Bangladesh, said a press release.
The decision was taken unanimously on Saturday at the ongoing 38th session of the Unesco General Conference at its headquarters in Paris.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid is leading the Bangladesh delegation to the ongoing 38th session of the Unesco General Conference, in Paris.
Ministers and senior officials of 195 member states, eight associate members and various UN agencies, media and NGOs, are attending the conference.
The head of the Bangladesh delegation extended its sincere thanks and gratitude to all the Member States for their support for the establishment of International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka, Bangladesh as Unesco Category-II Institute.
“We also thank the Education Sector of Unesco, particularly ADG Tang, for his continuous support throughout the long preparatory phase,” said another message.
The establishment of IMLI bears the testimony to Bangladesh’s strong commitment to linguistic diversity, multilingualism and the importance of education through mother language, it said.
On February 21, 1952 many students of Bangladesh laid down their lives to uphold the dignity of their mother tongue, the day that was proclaimed by Unesco on November 17, 1999 as the International Mother Language Day.
Bangladesh hopes the IMLI through research and focused programmes will become a centre of excellence on multilingual education, benefiting countries of the South Asian region and beyond.
“We firmly believe with the technical and intellectual support of the international community, the International Mother Language Institute will be able to deliver its desire output in the coming days,” the message reads.
