Investigation in most of the cases relating to the violence centering Hefazat-e-Islam rally at the city’s Shapla Chhatra has not yet been completed even after three years of the incident.Police sources said they are still carrying out investigation in most of the 80 cases filed in this connection after the incident.
Of the 80 cases, 53 were filed in Dhaka. Fifteen of those cases are being probed by the Detective Branch of police while the others by Motijheel, Paltan, Ramna, Shahbagh, Jatrabari, Kalabagan and Kamrangirchar police stations.
Police have so far completed investigation and filed charge sheet in three cases – one with Ramna police and others with Kalabagan police.
Police and affected people filed at least 80 cases with different police stations in Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chittagong and different police stations in the city accusing the Hefazat activists of launching attacks on law enforcers and damaging public property and burning the Qur’an during the demonstrations on May 5-6.
The sporadic incidents of violence took place on this day in 2013 were also spread out in different parts of the city including Gulistan, Paltan, Jatrabari, Rayerbagh and elsewhere in the country leaving several people killed and injured many.
Different political parties including the then opposition BNP and Jatiya Party had extended their supports to the Hefazat’s May 5 rally at Shapla Chattor.
The Quomi Madrasha based organisation held the rally at Motijheel to press home their 13-point demands including formulation of the anti-blasphemy law. But the supporters turned violent from noon and unleashed a reign of terror in the nearby areas causing deaths of around two dozen people and injured many.
Later the law enforcers flashed away the supporters from Motijheel at midnight as they had refused to leave the spot in the evening as per the conditions set by the police.
Meanwhile, Hefazat-e-Islami yesterday held a doa and milad mahfil at Hathazari Madrasha in Chittagong recalling the incidents and prayed for the departed souls what it said lost lives activists of the organisaiton.
