Jamaat leader Selim Uddin arrested

Jamaat-e-Islami Executive Work Council member and party’s Dhaka Metropolitan unit Assistant Secretary General Selim Uddin was arrested in the early hours of Friday from Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar following an International Crimes Tribunal arrest order.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detective branch head Ziaul Ahsan confirmed bdnews24.com that the Jamaat leader was nabbed from a Garden Road house in Karwan Bazar around 2:30am.
The ICT-2 on March 6, had issued arrest order against Selim and two other Jamaat leaders for failure to appear before the tribunal to explain their comments over a sub-judice matter.
Jamaat’s Acting Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan and Central Executive Council member and Member of Parliament Hamidur Rahman Azad are the other two whose arrest has also been ordered.
The ICT-2 has asked for their production before the tribunal by March 21.
Previously, these three leaders had failed to appear on three occasions.
Finally, the tribunal ruled on February 26 that if the three leaders did not appear before the tribunal by March 6, they would face arrest.
On February 4, at a party rally, Jamaat leader Selim Uddin had said, “This is not the last verdict. There have been several reactions since the verdict…they can’t be taken lightly…to save the country from civil war. Verdicts can’t be pronounced from a controversial tribunal.”
In that rally, Hamidur Rahman had said, “This tribunal shouldn’t continue for even a minute more.”
The ICT on February 7 issued notice against their statements after they were reported in the media on February 5.
The notice sought explanations as to why contempt of court action should not be taken against them.
On the other hand, Rafiqul Islam Khan had commented on tribunal’s verdict in a press briefing of February 5. Following this, the ICT-2 had asked him to appear before the tribunal and explain his comments.
Earlier, similar explanations were also sought from Home Minister MK Alamgir.
In the past, the tribunal has also issued show-cause notices against Minister without Portfolio Suranjit Sengupta and BNP leader MK Anwar. Banglanews24.com
