Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir on Tuesday said exemplary punishment will be meted out to ‘Jamaat-Shibir terrorists’ under the existing law of the land for their terrorist acts across the country.
“Islam is a religion of peace which doesn’t allow any kind of persecution and torture. Attacks on the minority communities won’t be tolerated at all,” he warned.
The Home Minister was addressing a rally near Bamandanga Railway Station after visiting different areas in Sundarganj upazila that came under Jamaat-Shibir attacks after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain to death on February 28 for his crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in 1971.
He said those, who attacked the Bamandanga police investigation centre and killed four policemen, carried out violent activities against the state, not the government.
In response to the demand of the locals to set up a full-fledged police station at Bamandanga, MK Alamgir assured them of considering it.
Earlier, the Home Minister came to Sundarganj by a helicopter of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) which landed on the Bamandanga Abdul Haque Degree College ground. From there, he went to visit the police investigation centre.
While talking to reporters after the visit, the Home Minister said he came here to console the affected people on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He alleged that Jamaat-Shibir and their patrons were unleashing violence across the country to block the war crimes trial. “Those who attacked the police station in Sundarganj, killed cops, and vandalised, torched and looted houses won’t be spared. It’ll have to be proved through their trial and punishment that Bangladesh is not a safe haven of criminals.”
In reply to a question, MK Alamgir said action will be taken against the officials of police and administration if allegations of dereliction of duty are found against them. UNB
