Jamdani gets GI registration

Dhaka – Jamdani, one of the finest muslin textiles of Bengal, has got registered as the country’s 1st first Geographical Indication (GI) product.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu handed over the registration certificate to BSCIC chairman Mustak Hasan Mohammad Iftekhar at a programme at the ministry.Following an application from the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under Industries Ministry gave the registration, said a PID handout.
The minister said Jamdani, the fifth edition of traditional muslin, is one of the well-known Bangladeshi products in the world. Following the registration as a GI product, Bangladesh marched one step ahead for protecting the heritage.
The government will gradually give registration to other GI products, including Hilsa, said Amu.
The government has already taken an initiative to register Hilsa as a GI product. The Fisheries Ministry, meanwhile, applied to the DPDT for registration. The GI registration process for Hilsa is underway, the handout added.
DPDT Registrar Md Sanwar Hossain presided over the programme.
Senior secretary Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, and BSCIC chairman Mustak Hasan Mohammad Iftekhar also spoke at the programme. – UNB
