Jamuna Group chief, wife, son sued on graft charges

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Sunday filed seven cases with a Dhaka court against Jamuna Group chairman Nurul Islam Babul, his wife Salma Islam and son Shamim Islam on charges of concealing wealth information and dodging tax.NBR deputy commissioners Zahirul Islam, Dipak Kumar Chakrawarty and Ataul Haque filed the cases with the court of Session’s Judge M Zahurul Haque for concealing information about assets worth Tk 1,551,914,230 and evading tax to the tune of Tk 453,128,088 from fiscal years 2007-08 to 2011-12.
The court fixed May 26 to decide whether it would take cognisance of the charges, said public prosecutor Taposh Kumar Paul.
Jamuna Electric Manufacturing, Jamuna Spinning Mills Ltd, Shamim Rotor Spinning Mills Ltd, Shamim Composite Mills Ltd, Jamuna Welding Electronics Ltd, Shamim Spinning Ltd and Jamuna Distillery Ltd were also made accused in the cases. (Source: UNB)
