An extraorfinary general meeting (EGM) of the National Press Club on Monday decided to hold the bianniel general meeting and election of its managing committee by 31 March next, as against the schedule to get it done by 30 December, and empowered the sitting committee to remain in charge till a new committee takes charge.
Due to adoption of this resolution the election schedule annouced by the managing committee to hold polls on 30 December stands cancelled.
Secretary of the club Syed Abdal Ahmed said the EGM had been called at the recommendation of some of its senior members and journalist leaders in view of the bianniel election.
He said the club having a glorious tradition of 60 years had always in the past settles all problems-crises through talks and discussion with the spirit of consensus, tolerence and friendliness to ensure the participation of all. Friendly atmosphere for election had always created in the past. This time too the managing committee as per the Club’s constitution announced the election schedule.
Some senior members and journalist leaders offered some suggestions to ensure that the election was held in a firendly atmosphere with the participation of all.  Foremost among those was, in view of the prevailing situation that was not detailed upon, to call an EGM and ensure holding of the election by 31 March 2015.
‘None of us want unilateral election in the club,’ he said. Senior members of the club thus reached a consensus for holding polls in an atmosphere of freindship and understanding and some other issues. We respect the consenus, he said.
Presided over by Kamaluddin Sabuj, president of the club, the EGM was addressed by senior memebrs Saleh Chowdhury, Azizul Islam Bhuiyan, Manzurul Islam Manzu, Abu Saleh, AKM Mohsin, Lutful Kabir Saadi and Khairul Bashar. Earlier the meering observed one-minute’s silence at the deminse of 12 senior members and offered munajat for their salvation. – Staff Reporter
