Dhaka – Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Juwel has been placed on a fresh eight-day remand in four cases while its general secretary Habibur Rashid Habib on a 10-day one in five cases.
The courts of four metropolitan magistrates passed the order after police produced them before their courts on Tuesday.Earlier, police prayed for a 40-day remand to quiz Juwel in four cases filed with Dhanmondi, Ramna and New Market police stations in the capital for vandalising and torching vehicles and blasting crude bombs.
On the other hand, police sought a 36-day remand to interrogate Habib in five cases filed the same police stations.
Opposing the remand prayer, Advocate Sanaullah Miah, the lawyer for the duo, said the names of the accused were not found in the cases’ statements and they were implicated in the cases only to be politically harassed.
After hearing, the courts concerned granted eight-day remand for Juwel while 10-day for Habib.
In the case filed with Paltan police station, the accused were charged with setting fire to vehicles and preventing police to discharge their professional duties and blasting cocktails in the capital’s Paltan area following Hefajat-e-Islam’s May 5 rally.
