A Juba League (JL) activist, who was injured in an attack allegedly by the 18-party opposition alliance activists in Sonaimuri upazila on Sunday evening died at a hospital in the town early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Mahfuz, 30, a JL activist of the upazila unit and son of Joynal Abedin of Jogjibanpur village of the upazila.
Police and victim’s family sources said a chase and counter-chase took place between the activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance and Awami League and JL men when the ruling party men brought out a jubilant procession in Gazaria area of the upazila around 7:00pm on Sunday marking what they claimed their victory in the 10th general election held on the day.
The opposition activists swooped on Mahfuz and hit him with sticks and brickbats, leaving him severely injured.
He was whisked off to Noakhali Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 3:00am on Monday.
Confirming the death, Abdus Samad, officer-in-charge of Sonaimuri Police Station, said they have launched a drive to arrest those responsible for the incident. -UNB, Noakhali
