Joining polls under current regime impossible: Fakhrul

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the opposition has no confidence in the current government and it will in no way go to the next general election under any partisan administration. “We don’t have any confidence in the current regime. It’s impossible to go to the polls under this government that oppressed the opposition leaders and activists over the last four and a half years,” he said.
Talking to reporters at the residence of Sylhet City Corporation Mayor-elect Ariful Haque Chowdhury, the BNP spokesman also said the current government will not be able to hold the next polls in a free, fair and credible manner.
Mentioning that it should not compare the local body polls with the general election, Fakhrul said, “The government is changed through a general election, but the local body polls can’t determine who will govern the country. So, the next parliamentary polls must be held under a non-party administration, though the recent local body polls were fairly held under the present government.”
He claimed that people have showed their no confidence in the government through electing the BNP-backed candidates in the elections to four city corporations, including Sylhet.
Reaffirming his party’s stance on pushing for restoration of the caretaker government system, Fakhrul said the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance will not go to the next polls under any party government.
The BNP leader blamed the Prime Minister for the growing trend of badmouthing in parliament and said the unparliamentarily words the MPs are using in the House are reflection of the language of leader of the House (PM).
He also said the parliament will get rid of the badmouthing culture if the Prime Minister herself stops using indecent and unparliamentarily words.
Earlier, local BNP leaders and activists received Fakhrul as he arrived here from Dhaka by road around 11am.
Talking to the party men, the BNP leader urged them to get united to wage a strong anti-government movement.
He also thanked the people of Sylhet for electing Arif the city mayor in the June-15 polls.
Later, the BNP acting secretary general offered fateha at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and  Hazrat Shah Paran (R). (Source: UNB)
