JU teachers hoist black flag

Agitating teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) hoisted black flag on the campus on Saturday demanding resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain.   More than 200 teachers under the banner ‘Shadharan Shikkhak (General Teachers’) Forum’ took part in the black flag hoisting prgramme around 12 pm in support of their demand.
Heads of 25 out of 34 departments, provosts of 12 out of 15 residential halls, Deans of 5 out of 6 faculties, 29 out of 33 teachers’ representatives to senate, and all syndicate members expressed solidarity with the ongoing agitation seeking removal of VC.
Earlier on Friday, over 370 teachers of the university also rendered their support to the current agitation.   Meanwhile, the agitating teachers on Saturday have kept VC Prof Anwar confined to his office for the fourth consecutive day demanding his removal.
However, a delegation of the teachers met Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid at his ministry today to discuss over resolving the prevailing deadlock situation. The teachers have been staging protests since April 27 for realising a 12-point demand, including resignation of the VC.
The resignation demand came as the VC did not take proper punitive measures against JU unit BCL secretary Razib Ahmed Rasel for assaulting Nurul Haque, a lecturer of Economics Department, and also a syndicate member. Meanwhile, more than 100 students of the university under the banner ‘Shadharan Shikkhartheebrindho’ brought out a silent procession on the campus demanding an end to the prevailing stalemate.   The procession started from central Shaheed Minar and paraded the main streets of the campus before returning to the point of its origin. – -UNB
