In a grim reminder to ridiculous factional feuds plaguing the Awami League, supporters of its youth front clashed near a restaurant in far-off New York on Saturday.Members of New York Juba League fought over the dissolution of its executive committee during an Iftar party.
Some leaders and activists began to protest after members of the old committee were made to leave the Iftar table with police assistance at a restaurant near the city’s Jackson heights.
They blamed new convener Tarikul Haider of throwing out the leaders and activists of the old committee to have the Iftar with supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP.
The members of the organization have been feuding ever since Juba League approved a new convener committee even when the old executive committee in New York had 18 months left for its term.
Meanwhile, an Iftar programme was organised by the executive committee to celebrate the birthday of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s only son, Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, at ‘Khabar Bari’ restaurant at New York’s Jackson Heights.
The new convener committee arranged another Iftar party at nearby ‘Palki Party Centre’.
Some of the supporters of the old committee blocked the way of five members of the new committee when they were about to join the Iftar program at ‘Palki Party Centre’ in the afternoon.
Witnesses said the agitated members of the old committee were throwing punches at those in the convener committee.
Amid that clash Juba Legue member Jamal Hussein charged towards convener Tariqul Haider.
Haider reportedly took $1,000 from Hussein to give him the post of Organizational Secretary of the new committee but never did. Several others were also seen lunging towards Tariqul all at the same time.
