Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said a law aiming to remove discriminations among citizens will be enacted within the tenure of the current government.
Addressing a workshop over the draft law on Discrimination Repeal Act, the minister said a draft in this regard ensuring equality of all citizens in light of the Constitution has already been prepared by the Law Commission.
Now the draft law needs detailed discussions before its passage by parliament so that it can effectively reflect the hopes and aspirations of the victims of inequalities, Anisul Huq said.
The workshop, chaired by Law Commission chairman Justice ABM Khairul Haque, was addressed, among others, by National Human Rights Commission chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman and Jahangirnagar University Vice Chancellor Dr Farzana Islam.
Justice Khairul Haque urged the minister to make headway in this regard in consultation with the Chief Justice to quickly dispose of huge backlog of cases at the High Court to provide relief to the justice-seekers.
Dr Mizanur Rahman said the enactment of the new law will not be enough to remove discriminations among citizens as it requires the change of mindset. -UNB
