Lightning kills 5 in Sylhet, Habiganj

Five people, including two schoolgirls, were killed in separate lightning strikes in Sylhet and Habiganj districts on Monday.In Sylhet, two schoolgirls were killed and another was injured as a thunderbolt struck them amid rain at Laxmiprasad village in Jaintapur upazila around 4pm on their way home from their school.

The deceased were identified as Doly Malakar, 10, daughter of Patan Malakar of the village, and Eshita Rahman Tarin, 7, daughter of Abdur Rahman of the same village.

Doly and Ishita were Class-V and II students of Laxmiprasad Government Primary School respectively.

Sub-inspector of Jaintapur Police Station Binoy Bhuson Roy said Doly died on the spot while students Ishita and Lipi Malakar, 8, suffered injuries by the lightening strike.

Ishita and Lipi were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Ishita dead.

In Habiganj, farmer Abdul Alim, 40, and his brother Wali Miah, 34, sons of Buddi Miah of Kaliabhanga village in Nabiganj upazila, suffered injuries as a thunderbolt hit them while harvesting paddy in a field in the village in the afternoon.

They were taken to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Another man, Jewel Miah, 20, son of Abdul Wadud of Kamalkhani village in Baniachang upazila, died on the spot by a lightning strike in the village during a storm in the afternoon.
