The High Court on Monday cleared the way for continuing a case filed against six people, including Janakantha editor Atikullah Khan Masud, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act in 2001.An HC bench comprising Justice Md Emdadul Huq and Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan passed the order after rejecting a petition filed for canceling the case proceedings.
The HC also withdrew its earlier stay order on the trial proceedings of the case.
Following the HC order, there is no bar to continuation of the case in the lower court, said Helal Uddin Mollah, a counsel of the plaintiff.
Barrister Shahzada Al Amin Kabir stood for the petitioners while assistant attorney general Aminur Rahman Chowdhury Tiku represented the state.
According to the case statement, a woman filed the case against then MP Kamal Ahmed Majumdar with Mirpur Police Station in 2001 on rape charge.
On January 4 and 5, 2002, the Daily Janakantha published a report with the image of the victim.
On January 19, the victim filed a case against six people, including Atikuallah Kahn Masud, Janakantha advisory editor Toab Khan and the then executive editor Borhan Uddin Ahmed.
