Major Hafiz implicated in murder, placed on remand

A court of Dhaka on Monday granted a 2-day remand for BNP Vice Chairman Major (retired) M Hafizuddin Ahmed Bir Bikram in connection with killing a police throwing a petrol bomb on a bus at Bangla Motor intersection in the capital. Metropolitan Magistrate Harunur Rashid of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka granted the remand after hearing.
Earlier, Sub-inspector and also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Ali Hossain of Ramna Police Station sought a seven-day remand to quiz the BNP leader.
Pro-BNP lawyers including Md Shanaullah Mia and Masud Ahmed Talukder sought bail of Hafizuddin Ahmed rejecting bail pleas of the prosecution.
After the hearing pro-BNP and pro-Awami League lawyers chanted various slogans for and against Khaleda Zia’s March for Democracy. Suddenly the lawyers were involved in a hassle for some time, however, senior lawyer of both groups brought the situation under control.
On December 24 at around 11.15 pm some miscreants hurled a petrol bomb on a bus at Bangla Motor area causing the death of Md Ferdous, a member of police. Besides, the driver of the bus and another member of police received burn injuries.
On December 25, SI Najmul of Ramna Police Station filed the case with the Police Station against some top leaders of BNP including Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeswar Chandra Roy, Joint Secretary General Amamullah Aman, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon MP and Sahuddin Ahmed.
Later, on December 26, police arrested Joint Secretary General Mahbub Uddin Khokon MP seeking a 10-day remand, however, the court rejected the bail and remand pleas.
Hafizuddin was arrested in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Sunday evening minutes after he gave a press briefing announcing the BNP-led
18-party alliance’s next programme of agitation. – Court Correspondent
