Mango trading helps Rajshahi economy

The huge trading of mangoes in Rajshahi district is on the way of
waning as all quality mangoes except Fazli and Ashina are nearly out
of market and those are still at the last leg are exorbitant in price.
The economy of Rajshahi boosts with the emergence of mango every year.
There is also a huge employment generation during this time and the
marginal farmers as well as unemployed young men of the region get
their ways to generate income through seasonal mango trading. The
mango will, however, continue to reach the market till next two
months.
Already the trading of mango in Rajshahi is waning. Sending of mangoes
to various places of the country including in Dhaka through courier
services and through other transports has already been decreased. The
mangoes have now gone beyond the purchasing capacity of common people
due its exorbitant price.
It is learnt, this year mango appeared in the market from the first
week of May. The first varieties were Gopalbhog, Khirsapat, Mohon Bhog
and Rani Pasand. Langra, Amrapali, Khudi-Langra, Brindaboni,
Laxmanbhog and Mallika appeared next. These all varieties are now out
of market or nearing end.
Now, Surma Fazli and Fazli are being sold in the markets of Rajshahi.
In addition, Ashina mangoes are also started to appear in the markets.
In the markets of Rajshahi, the Surma Fazli mango is being sold at Tk
70 to 80 per kg, Fazli at Tk 60 to 70, Amrapali at Tk 80, Langra at Tk
180.
Peter, a mango trader at Shaheb Bazaar area informed, the price of
mango was increasing by Tk 10 to 15 per kilogramme per day. He
mentioned the scarcity of mango and increased transport cost was
responsible for such increase of price.
Meanwhile, some of mango orchard owners of the district have still
kept the mangoes on their trees by spraying special type of chemicals.
They are likely to pluck those mangoes during the ensuing Ramadan to
get a good price.
Mango trader Ataur of Shalbagan area informed, if the Langra mango is
available till second week of Ramadan, the price would reach to Tk 200
or more per kilogramme.
Pulak, Manager of Sunderban Courier in Rajshahi informed, the rush for
sending mango through courier service has decreased now. Other courier
services like Ahmed Courier, SA Paribahan, Janani Paribahan and
Karotoa Courier are also receiving less mango baskets in compared to
last several weeks. The managers of courier services in Rajshahi
informed, the bookings of mango have down to 20 percent compared to
the full mango season.
Dr. Alim Uddin, Senior Scientific Officer of Rajshahi Horticulture
Research Centre informed, due to extreme heat, drought, pest
infestation and want of proper care, the production of mangoes was
hampered in the district. Still there was a bumper production of mango
in the district.
The sources further informed, so far mango trading of roughly Tk 400
crore was transacted during this season so far and more than Tk 50
crore is still in the pipeline. -Our Correspondent
