Maxmum security for Gazipur City election: EC

Dhaka, June 22 – The Election Commission and the administration have taken the highest strict security measures around the Gazipur City Corporation area over the civic poll scheduled to be held on June 26. A total of 16,000 security forces will be deployed included police, RAB, BGB, Ansar and intelligence agencies. In addition, there will be mobile court led by an executive magistrate who will work till June 27. On the other hand, the candidates in this election are trying their best to snatch the crown of victory ahead of the election. They are going to door to door along with their activists and supporters and requesting the voters for casting votes them.
EC sources said, for the first time in any city corporation election, there is a mobile court here in each ward under an executive magistrate. In addition, another mobile court with a judicial magistrate will work in three Wards. Besides, around 16,000 members of BGB, Police, RAB, Ansar and intelligence agencies will work as security forces. CC cameras are also installed in important places of the city. The security for the candidates has been strengthened to avoid any unwanted situation. EC said that such security measures have been taken in order to ensure a free, fair and neutral election as well as ensure the voters’ participation in the election. On the other hand, the law enforcing agencies are also conducting raids at different areas of the city to ensure a fair election and it will continue after the election.
The assistant returning officer of the election and also Gazipur district election officer Tarifuzzaman said that all kinds of campaigns are being ended from June 24 midnight. The Election Commission is trying their best to ensure a free and fair election. He said, we already hold few meeting with the law enforcers agencies and at the same time, officials of the Election Commission are visiting the whole city corporation area.
There are total 57 wards in Gazipur City Corporation areas the number of voters is 11 lakh 37 thousand and 736. The number of male and female voters is almost equal. Among the 425 polling centres, 337 were identified as important centres (Risky). The Election Commission identified those centres as important centres considering the communication system, transportation, local impact and local public.
Additional superintendent of Gazipur police Rasel Sheikh said we have already taken all measures to hold a free and fair election in Gazipur. He said total 10 thousand police and Ansar members will be deployed in polling centres. Besides, mobile team, striking forces and patrol team will work in the city areas. However, restrictions on Taxicab, Baby Taxi, Autorickshaw, Microbus, Jeep, Pickup, Car, Bus, Truck, Tempu, motorcycle’s movement have been imposed on June 25 midnight to June 26 midnight. On the other hand, external residents are not voters, they will have to leave the election area before o June 23.
Campaign of Candidates
BNP led 20 party alliance nominated candidate Alhaj Hasan Uddin Sarker participated campaigning and rally at Bason area and Moghorkhal area of the city before Juma prayer. Later, he spoke at several rallies at T&T colony, Jogitola, Notun Bazar, Kazim Uddin Market, Itahata, Haque Market and Chandona area of the city. In the rally, Hasan Sarker said, this is not an election for changing of government but it is a local government election. So there is no reason to fear the verdict of the people. He requested the government and the Election Commission to stop the mass arrest of his party men and create the level playing field.
BNP standing committee member Khondoker Mosharaf Hossain, former mayor of Chittagong City corporation Mir Nasir Uddin, ex-MP Helaluzzaman Lalu, vice chairman Abdullah Al Numan, Barkat Ullah Bhulu, Abul Kalam Azad, Shahidul Islam Babul, general secretary of Tati Dal Kazi Moniruzzaman Monir, Sabera Alauddin, Gazipur district BNP president Fazlul Haque Milon, general secretary Kazi Sayedul Alam Babul, joint secretary Sohrab Uddin, BNP leader Soruz Ahmed, Hefazat leader Mufti Nasir Uddin also participated in rally and mass contact at different wards of the city.
AL: Awami league nominated mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam met a delegation of Tabligue Jamat on Friday morning at his residence at Chhoidana area. Later, he started his campaign at Kolabagan, Mojlishpur, Banglabazar, Chandona Chowrasta, Salina area of the city. Mayor of Khulna city corporation Talukder Abdul Khaleque, central leader Mostafa Jalal Mohi Uddin, central organizing secretary barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel, BCL secretary Mohammed Zakir Hossain, Ulema League president Akter Hossain Bokhary participated campaigning for Jahangir Alam in different areas of the city.
