Govt approves sedition case against Khaleda

The Ministry of Home on Sunday gave approval to file a sedition case against BNP Chief Begum Khaleda Zia in connection with her comment about the number of martyrs in country’s war of independence.Momtaj Uddin Ahmed Mehedi, a lawyer of the Supreme Court received the letter, through which the ministry approved filing case on Sunday. Earlier, he had sought the permission. Lawyer Mehedi told the media that he would go to the judicial court to file a case on Monday.

On December 21, last year, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at a rally of freedom fighters commented that there is a controversy about the number of martyrs in the country’s war of independence of 1971. Two days after, Momtaj Uddin Mehedi sent a legal notice to withdraw Khaleda Zia’s comment.

The lawyer later sought home ministry’s approval, and he did not get any reply of the legal notice.

Khaleda’s lawyer and also the Supreme Court Bar Association President Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain opined that there is no sedition in BNP Chief’s speech about the accurate number of martyrs.
