MK Anwar secures bail

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to BNP Standing Committee member MK Anwar in a case filed under the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Act, 2006.
Dhaka,s  Metropolitan Magistrate Mustafa Shahriar Khan granted the bail on a bond of Tk 20,000 after the BNP leader surrendered to the court.
According to the case filed with Paltan Police Station in the capital, activists of Hefajat-e-Islam from a rally allegedly torched many roadside shops near the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on May 5.
Later, the government blamed the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir to instigate for the incident.
Dismissing the allegation at a press briefing the following day, MK Anwar blamed the ruling Awami League for the incident, saying Debasis Biswas, a leader of AL’s associate body Swechchasebak League Dhaka (South unit) along with his followers set the shops on fire.
Later, Nasir Uddin, a sub-inspector of Paltan Police Station, filed a general diary and then a court of Dhaka directed DB Inspector Anisul Islam to look into the allegation and submit a report about the incident.
Anisul submitted a charge sheet against the BNP leader, finding the allegation true on June 17 under the ICT act, and the court later issued a summon to MK Anwar.
MK Anwar surrendered to the court and sought bail on Thursday Morning. It was learnt from the court that the case may be transferred to Dhaka’s Metropolitan Session Judge Court for trial. – Court Correspondent
