MP Rony refused bail, sent to jail

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Thursday sent ruling Awami League lawmaker Golam Mawla Rony to jail rejecting his bail petition.He was taken to the CMM Court at around 12.15 pm by a white-colored car in a case filed for allegedly beating two journalists of The Independent Television. The Detective Branch (DB) took Rony to the CMM Court.
Defence lawyer Kabir Hossain moved the bail petition on behalf of MP Rony, while prosecution lawyer Azizur Rahman vehemently opposed the bail petition.
After hearing Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashiqur Rahman rejected the bail plea Rony.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Thursday said the Government showed due respect to the media people by arresting MP Rony.
On Wednesday Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan passed Rony’s arrest order canceling his fail, following a petition of the complainant. Earlier, The Independent TV assistant manager and also the complainant of the case Yunus Ali alleged that Rony threatened him after he got bail.
The Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Sub-Inspector Abu Zafar made inquiry into the allegation and found it true, which led to his arrest on Wednesday.
On July 20, the authorities of The Independent TV filed a case against Patuakhali-3 MP Rony and 20/25 other unknown people for their alleged involvement in physically assaulting reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul of their channel at his Topkhana Road office in the capital. The case statement says that Rony and other accused people were accused of attempt to murder, vandalism and arson.
Earlier, on Saturday night, Golam Mawla Rony also filed a case against Salman F Rahman, owner of The Independent TV, and two others with Shahbagh Police Station accusing them of extortion and threatening to kill him.
On July 21, Magistrate Rezaul Karim allowed Rony bail upon a bond of Tk 5,000 after he surrendered to the court seeking bail. – Court Correspondent
