Mystery shrouds over youth’s death in RAB custody

Mystery shrouds over the death of a young man who was allegedly killed in the custody of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) after his arrest from Aruapara in the town on Thursday.The deceased was identified as Iqbal Hossain Maruf, 25, son of Atiar Rahman of Borobazar Ghoraghat area of the town.

RAB sources said acting on secret information that a group of criminals were holding a clandestine meeting near a graveyard at Aruapara in the town, a RAB team raided the area and arrested Maruf along with firearms at about 1:45 pm.

When Maruf fell sick at the RAB camp, he was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where he died at about 6:45 pm.

Connected, Dr Ashraful Islam at the emergency department of the hospital said several injury marks were found in the body of Iqbal.

The cause of Maruf’s death will be clear after receipt of the autopsy report, he added.
Hafizur Rahman Helal, elder brother of the victim, alleged RAB members killed his brother through torture and then got him admitted to the hospital.
Brushing aside the allegation, Captain Mosaddek Ibne Mujib, acting commander of Kushtia RAB-12, said locals caught Iqbal and gave him a severe thrashing.
Later, RAB rescued him (Iqbal) from the mob with injury marks in the body and when he fell sick, he was admitted to the hospital, added Captain Mosaddek.UNB, Kushtia
