Next polls to be critical: Dipu Moni

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Wednesday said the next general election will be a critical threshold for Bangladesh’s journey onwards.She made the remarks while briefing diplomats and representatives of development partners on the country’s latest political situation at a city hotel in the evening.

The Foreign Minister said the government will not allow the clock to be turned back on the fundamental tenets of statecraft and harbour.

She also said the government would continue to maintain its zero tolerance approach to any form of extrajudicial killings -– either by the law enforcers or members of the public.

Dipu Moni expressed the hope that the international community would remain sensitised to the exigencies by the government.

This is the second such briefing within a month. There was a similar briefing on March 7 at the Foreign Ministry.

Development partners and diplomats have continued expressing concern over the political violence that erupted across the country following the determination of election system and the trial of war crimes accused.

In her last briefing to diplomats, Dipu Moni urged the international community to show respect to the overwhelming popular demand emanating from the people of Bangladesh and join their condemnation of those found guilty of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

At the briefing, the diplomats also wanted to know about the huge public demand for banning Jamaat-e-Islami’s politics.UNB
