The Election Commission has asked the law enforcers to be on ‘maximum alert’ to hold the second phase of the Upazila Parishad election smoothly on Thursday.
Polls will be held in 116 Upazilas and some 20 million voters are expected to cast their ballots.
“Some minor acts of violence took place in the first phase of elections, but that did not create much trouble,” said Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz at his office on Wednesday.He said, “Minor incidents of violence can take place when polls are held simultaneously in many parts of the country.
But the law enforcers have been instructed to be on maximum alert so that no act of violence is repeated in the next phases of the polls.”
Replying to a query from reporters, he said, “No candidate is getting any favour. All allegations are being taken into cognisance.”
The election to Moheshkhali, which was to be held in the second phase, will now be held on March 1.
PR Director of the Election Commission SM Asaduzzaman said 1376 candidates are in the fray in the second phase.
Of them, 515 are vying for the chairman posts, 521 for vice chairman and 340 for female vice chairman.-bdnews24.com
