BNP on Saturday objected to holding City Corporation and Upazila Council elections before the parliamentary polls, alleging it was a “plot” the government was trying.
Citing media reports, BNP Standing Committee member Tariqul Islam alleged it was a move to “confuse the people and drive their attention towards elections”. “These plots will never see the light of day… They will be thwarted with movements.”
The senior BNP leader was talking to journalists after placing a wreath at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman in the morning.
Alleging that the ruling Awami League was “headed for a one-sided parliamentary poll”, the senior BNP leader said: “Our goal is to hold a free and fair election by establishing a non-partisan government. We will intensify our ongoing movements as we go along.”
He apparently pointed to the recent Chittagong-12 by-polls and said that the voters were not interested in “one-sided” elections. He alleged that the Election Commission had “rigged votes and showed false voter attendance to make the ruling party-backed candidate victorious”.
The leader also expressed his angst over reports of nominating Harun-r Rashid, the police officer who “attacked” the opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abedin Farroque, for the President Medal.
He added that Harun was guilty of “not stopping the Awami League cadres” from killing the Old Dhaka youth, Biswajit Das.
Tariqul also criticised the use of pepper spray in recent demonstrations saying people had constitutional right to stage protests.
