No unfit vessels on rivers during Eid: Shipping Minister

Shipping Minister M Shajahan Khan on Tuesday said the unfit river vessels would not be allowed to ply the river to avert accidents during the Eid-ul-Fitr. “The government has taken necessary steps to keep the accidents on the river routes at zero level this year,” said the Shipping Minister while talking to the reporters after attending a signing ceremony on Annual performance agreement of the Shipping Ministry at the Secretariat. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.

Acting Shipping Secretary Ashok Madhab Roy and the heads of ten organisations under Shipping Ministry signed the agreement on behalf of their respective fields. Replying to a question, Shajahan Khan said following the government’s various attempts to cut down accidents on river routes, the number of accidents has decreased. According to the minister just two accidents occurred on river routes in 2015.

Besides, law enforcing agencies, official concerned of the ministry and the heads of the organisation concerned have taken necessary steps for ensuring safe movement of the passengers during Eid, he said. Police and the officials of BIWTA will continue constant monitoring so that no launch with excess passengers can leave from the launch ghats, and mobile courts will carry out drives to check it.
