Official probe body chief vows to expose N’ganj murders

Chief of the probe body, formed to investigate law enforcers’ involvement in the Narayanganj seven-murder case, Md Shahjahan Ali Mollah on Thursday said the fact behind the murder of seven people would be unveiled.
“The investigation into the murders will be carried out neutrally. The truth must come out,” Shahjahan, also additional secretary to the Public Administration Ministry, said.Talking to reporters after the first meeting of the probe body at the secretariat, the probe body chief said the investigation team will visit the spot on Thursday and talk to the victims’’ family members on Friday.
The Public Administration Ministry on Wednesday formed the seven-member probe panel following a High Court order to look into the alleged involvement of Rab officials in the abductions and killings of seven people.
The committee through a public inquiry will find out whether any member of the administration or law enforcement agencies has any direct or indirect link with the abductions and murders. It will also investigate whether there was any reluctance or negligence by the law enforcers in taking action for rescuing the abductees alive, Shahjahan said.
On Monday, the High Court issued a suo moto rule asking the government to form a seven-member committee to investigate the allegation that Rab personnel were involved in the killing of Nazrul Islam and six others.
The other members of the committee are deputy secretaries of Public Administration Ministry Md Abdul Qayum Sarker and Abul Kashem Md Mohiuddin, deputy secretaries of Law Ministry Md Mostafizur Rahman and Md Mizanur Rahman Khan and deputy secretaries of Home Ministry Md Shafiqur Rahman and Sayeed Mahmud Belal Haider.
The committee has been asked to submit its report to the Attorney General within seven days. Issuing the rule, the HC had also asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure the security of witnesses in connection with the incident.
It also asked not to involve Rab in the investigation as it is the agency the members of which have been accused of taking bribe.
Besides, the HC asked the Rab authorities to initiate departmental investigation into the allegation. – UNB
