Election Commission (EC) in Barisal on Wednesday began to scrutinise nomination papers for Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Election scheduled to be held on June 15.
Five nomination papers for mayor candidates – three from BNP and one from Awami League and Jamaat were declared valid after scrutiny. The mayor candidates are Bodar Uddin Ahmed Kamran outgoing Mayor and city AL president, Ariful Haque Chy, Excutive member of central BNP, Abdul Kaium Jalali Ponki, secretary of Sylhet City BNP, Advocate Samsuzzaman Jaman Ass. secretary city BNP, Aahsanul Mahbub Jubair Ameer of Sylhet City Jamaat.
On the other hand, two nomination papers out of 7 Mayour candidates, 152 for general councillor candidates and two out of 9 for reserved female councillor candidates were cancelled.
Azharul Haque of Sylhet regional election commissioner and returning officer of SCC election, said, adding that scrutiny would be completed on Thursday.
After scrutiny, the final list of candidates would be published on May 26, he said.
