The 19th session of the ninth Parliament has been adjourned until Nov 18.
Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali made the announcement after Sunday’s session.
The current session had begun on Sept 12 amid the stand-off between the two major political parties over the form of the polls-time government.
The Business Advisory Committee on Oct 23 decided to extend it beyond Oct 24, its stated deadline, until Nov 7.
According to the Constitution, the Speaker has the power to extend or curtail the session’s duration. The Speaker will decide later how long the current session will continue.
As per the 15th constitutional amendment, the general election has to be held within the last 90 days of the incumbent government’s term. In this case, the polls must be held by Jan 24, 2014.
Several senior Grand Alliance MPs had demanded the session run beyond Oct 24 after the main opposition, BNP, threatened a ‘tougher agitation’ to press for its demand for a non-party caretaker government.
