Hartals, enforced by local BNP, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and BNP-led 18-party alliance in Magura, Chandpur, Jhenidah, Nilphamari and Tangail districts, ended almost peacefully on Wednesday.
In Magura, a daylong hartal enforced by local unit BNP in Mohammadpur upazila ended without any major incident of violence.
A chase and counter-chase took place between activists of Awami League and BNP when the ruling party men brought out an anti-hartal procession at Dhoail in the upazila around 12:30 pm that left 10 people injured.

In Jhenidah, the BNP-led 18-party alliance-enforced daylong hartal in the district on Wednesday protesting the killing of BNP leader Abul Hossain in Harinakundu upazila on Monday, the second day of the opposition’s 60-hour hartal, was observed peacefully.
Unidentified terrorists killed Abul Hossain, president of Harinakunda upazila unit BNP and a resident of Dakhalpur village of the upazila, at Dakhalpur Bazar in the upazila on Monday noon.
In Tangail, the eight-hour hartal enforced by Madhupur unit BNP in the upazila protesting the arrest of the upazila unit BNP leaders and activists, was observed peacefully.
The shutdown call came from a meeting of the upazila unit BNP leaders and activists on Monday.
Police arrested 69 leaders and activists of BNP from different places of the upazila in separate cases filed by police and local Awami League centring on demonstration for a non-party polls-time government.
During the hartal hours, most shops and business establishments remained closed and vehicular movement suspended in the upazila.
In Nilphamari, the half-day hartal enforced by Jaldhaka upazila unit Jamaat-e-Islami ended peacefully.
The hartal supporters blocked roads by burning tyres and placing logs at Bagulagari Bridge on Nilphamari-Jaldhaka, Moulvir Bazar and Tenganmari areas in the upazila.
A Shibir man was killed in a clash with Rapid Action Battalion and police when the Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a procession demanding the release of their central leaders on October 25.
Protesting the incident, the upazila unit Jamaat-e-Islami announced a half-day hartal in the upazila for Wednesday. – UNB
